28 December
Getting up close to the Big Five is one of the most sought after experiences of any African holiday, so Australian wholesaler has taken it a step closer with a new experience that allows travellers to walk among lions.

The ‘Walk with Lions’ experience is part of a six-day safari in Victoria Falls, that allows visitors to walk through the bush with young orphaned lions that have been in captivity while being rehabilitated for release.

Priced from $1775 per person twin share, the tour includes three nights at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge; a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River; guided walk of the Falls; and two nights in a mobile tented camp in Botswana's Chobe National Park. Accommodation and most meals are included, along with local transport and sightseeing activities.

The company also offers a range of other short-stay options in South Africa, including a two-night package at Sun City from $750 per person, a four-day tour along the Garden Route from $1190 and four days in Cape Town with extensive day touring from $700.

The success of the 'Walk with Lions' experience has seen the tour operator open a similar program in Mauritius.

Adventure World has also created a comprehensive range of Southern Africa departures in its new 2008-09 brochure.

Perfect for first-time visitors, the company’s 15-night South African Panorama, priced from $5508 per person, captures many of the major highlights of the country, including Mpumalanga and Kruger National Parks; the culture of Swaziland and Zululand; the beaches of Durban; and the stunning scenery of the Garden Route and Cape Town.

Another excellent package is the 15-night Shongololo Express- Dr David Livingstone tour which is a unique rail journey from Johannesburg to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania through Zimbabwe and Zambia, following in the footsteps of 19th century explorer, Dr Livingstone. The 4000 kilometre trip is priced from $9418, with departures in May and June 2008.

For those looking for more independence, there are also four-night self drive itineraries through the province of Mpumalanga and world-famous Kruger National Park, enabling travellers to drive through the game park at leisure and view game from their own car. A range of shorter journeys is also offered, such as the three-day Durban safari, or Victoria Falls side-trip; along with stopovers in Mauritius.
