Loose Goose for forest fun

Tucked away in virgin bushlands near the tiny southern township of Nannup, the Loose Goose chalets offer a delightful escape into Western Australia’s South West forests.

Nestled on 17 hectares of privately owned land flanked by state forests, the property offers a total bushland immersion and anyone keen to escape the city bustle will be rewarded with the refreshing sound of silence.

Loose Goose guests can do as little as they like, but there is plenty to do too, making it ideally suited to families or several families holidaying together.

Accommodation is in three self-contained, two-bedroom cabins, adequately spaced to ensure privacy, but still close enough to suit small groups.

The cabins are well designed with a shady verandah, gas barbeque and spacious rooms – one even boasting a loft bedroom, which is a huge hit with the older kids.

Quality bedding is supplied and the cabins have a DVD/VCR player, fridge, microwave, bath and a well-equipped kitchen with gas cook top, crockery and cutlery.

Hearty country breakfast hampers and a choice of light meals may be pre-ordered.

The surrounding forests are laced with interesting walking tracks and well-marked dirt-bike trails, with some leading down to the nearby Blackwood River where visitors will find excellent animal spotting, and the chance to take a refreshing swim in Barabup Pool.

Wildlife abounds with dozens of species of native birds as well as kangaroos, emus and wildflowers galore in season.

The homestead itself is a veritable menagerie of animals with geese, peacocks, rabbits and other animals in residence and guests of all ages are welcome to pet and help with feeding.

And when the animals are fed, it might be time to grab your golf gear and try out the six-hole bush golf course, which is challenging and fun.

The Loose Goose has year round appeal, with summer presenting opportunities to fish and swim or spot wildlife, while winter and shoulder season months means snuggling around the fireplace, long bushwalks and fun and games in the ‘Goose Shed’.

Sitting against one fenceline, the ‘Goose Shed’ is a function centre and entertainment venue all in one, with enough room for up to 150 seminar delegates and plenty of room for children to play on a rainy day.

The Goose Shed has a rustic feel with exposed jarrah walls and bush poles, with some time-worn historic relics on display, making you feel immediately at home as you tinker on the piano or play a game of table tennis, or simply watch the kangaroos hopping down to the lake through floor to ceiling windows.

Rates start from around $120 per night for a family of four, and bookings are essential.
