Berlin gets the summer spirit

June 2008
It is difficult to imagine a destination further away from a tropical beach holiday scene than Berlin, but the destination’s fun-loving hoteliers have taken on the challenge and are building their own beaches along the city’s most famous waterways.

Berlin Beach Bar

Berlin Beach Bar

The slow-moving waters of the River Spree now boast dozens of vibrant beach bars, complete with sun, sand, deck chairs and hip-swaying Caribbean ambiance - courtesy of local bands and the enthusiasm of youth.

While the bars are established year-round, they really come into their own with the first hints of summer in late April or May, when patrons begin shedding their winter coverings to kick back by the river – oops, beach!

The sight of a beach party against the backdrop of Berlin’s picturesque city parklands is initially a little surreal, but the locals have embraced their ‘beach culture’ and are flocking to the sand in droves.

Berlin’s city beaches are themed with a variety of concepts for the urban beach fan with some offering sporting activities like beach volleyball, and others focus on live music and the arts. Each bar is different, but all capture the common theme of a holiday island in the inner-city.

Known as the "mother of Berlin City Beach Bars", the Strandbar Mitte am Monbijoupark, was the first to open in Berlin, and after four years it remains the undisputed favourite with a varied client mix from politicians to tourists. Located in the cultural heart of the city, the bar is the place to chill out under palm trees with a refreshing cocktail, taking in the river views over Museum Island and the Bode Museum.
The bar is open daily from 10 am with live bands and free dance evenings. Visit http://www.bundespressestrand.de

SummerWorld, located near popular Potsdamer Platz, is the place of choice for serious partying. Doors open from 10 am and don’t close until the last guest leaves.

For art lovers, there is Space Beach with its stunning décor and outstanding art works, including a seven-metre tall UFO sculpture. Aside from the beach deckchairs, there is a floating pontoon to sit and watch the riverboats cruise slowly by.

Those who fancy swimming at a beach party will need to head to Badeschiff at the Arena on Eichenstrasse 4. Entry costs around $5, which allows visitors to enjoy the beach and take a dip in the outdoor heated pool. Al fresco barbeque areas and a stylish cocktail bar completes the scene.
