In pursuit of the northern lights
Northern Scandinavia is among the best places to witness one of the planet’s most eerie and spectacular natural light shows, with the famous ‘northern lights’ of the Aurora Borealis visible for more days than anywhere else in the world.
To view the lights in comfort, Scandinavian cruise company, Hurtigruten, has created a special Hunting the Light tour which visits up to 20 coastal ports and providing ample opportunity to view this natural phenomenon.
The four-day voyage begins in Bodø in Norway and includes such experiences as a Viking feast in the traditional surroundings in Lofoten; visiting the world’s most northernmost brewery in Tromsø; and for the more adventurous, shore trips for dog sledding or snowmobile riding.
During the journey passengers gain an intimate insight into life along the coast, as the voyage follows the northern lights into the Arctic. The tour finishes in Kirkenes, with a sumptuous spread of King crab and other local delicacies, and a visit to the famous Snow Hotel, built solely of ice and snow.
The four-day itinerary runs from 15 November to 31 March and is priced from $890 per person twin-share. Optional shore excursions cost extra.
Also on offer is Hurtigruten’s 12-day Norwegian Coastal Voyage which has frequently been called the ‘worlds most beautiful voyage’. This 4000 kilometre sea voyage sails from Bergen, along the coast of Norway to Kirkenes in the far north, calling at 34 ports in each direction. The journey explores the waterways that have been a vital link for Norway's coastal communities for more than 100 years and includes port calls at quaint Scandinavian fishing towns and villages. Seven-day voyages from Bergen to Kirkenes, or six-day voyages from Kirkenes to Bergen are also available.
Prices for the 12-day voyage start from $1700 per person twin share and include most meals.
Prices are cruise-only and don’t include international airfares.
