Traveltalk April 2010

It’s been a busy month trying to keep on top of the constant changes within the travel industry as it bursts back from last year’s slow down.

Airlines have again dominated much of the news this month with new products, new services, new destinations and the unfortunate closure of budget carrier, Viva Macau. While the airline offered hope of a turnaround following the GFC, it seems cash flows finally beat its recovery.

So, while some commiserate, other airlines, like THAI, are celebrating with the airline hitting a major milestone – 50 years of flying. On page 8, we take a look at the airline’s humble beginnings and where it is today. The picture of an elephant towing a jet at Bangkok is a classic.

One of the big surprises for the month was a trip to South Australia to have a look at the state’s burgeoning tourism industry and the products driving the growth.

It seems the hard work over recent years is now paying off, with South Australia enjoying growth across all major tourism regions – so much so that its capital city, Adelaide, is suffering a room shortage during peak periods.

Wines remain a major drawcard, with Kangaroo Island firmly established as the number one selling tourism product, but we also discovered a few secrets, so check out the report which starts on page 19.

We also take a look at the diversity of new products springing up across the Arabian Peninsula and Europe, as well as visiting one of our favourite South Pacific hideaways – Norfolk island.
